TEPCO: Stabilizing Nuke Plant to Take 9 Months

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) says it will try to stabilize the situation concerning the nuclear fuel at the Fukushima power plant in the next six to nine months to suppress radioactive leakage.

The company says it's expected to take three months to gradually reduce radiation levels of the nuclear reactors and another three to six months to drastically reduce the amount.

TEPCO says it will first inject nitrogen in the area between the pressure container where the nuclear fuel rods are and the containment vessel, and then it will fill the gap with cooling water to try to eventually cool and suspend the reactors.

The company will also try to cover the buildings of the Unit One, Three and Four reactors with a lid over the next nine months. The buildings’ roofs were damaged by hydrogen explosions.

This is TEPCO’s first time announcing a recovery road map of the crippled power plant crisis. But due to variables, including water that's been highly tainted with radiation, it’s unclear whether TEPCO will be able to stick to its plan.
