Japanese government sources say South Korea, the United States and Japan will hold a trilateral meeting early next month.
The sources said Friday that South Korea’s chief nuclear negotiator Wi Sung-lac, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell, and Japan’s top nuclear envoy Shinsuke Sugiyama will meet sometime next month at an undecided location.
The officials are expected to discuss follow-up measures after the recent meetings between the top nuclear negotiators of the two Koreas and meetings being held between top U.S. and North Korean officials.
The sources said that during the anticipated trilateral talks, Japan plans to urge Seoul and Washington to pressure the North to address the issue of Japanese abductees in the communist state.
The sources also said although Japan intends to normalize its relations with the North, it will not seek discussions with the North solely for the sake of talks.
Efforts to normalize North Korea-Japan relations have been stalled since August 2008.
