US Urges NK to Exercise Restraint Following Shelling

The United States has urged restraint from North Korea following South Korea’s claims that the North fired artillery rounds toward the Northern Limit Line on Wednesday.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Wednesday that the U.S. understood the exchange of fire to be over and called on Pyongyang to “exercise restraint.”

Nuland stressed that North Korea must show the U.S. and South Korea, among other partners, that it's committed to goals concerning denuclearization.

She said Washington wants to see the North take steps along the lines they discussed in New York last month in a bid to resume the stalled six-way nuclear talks.

The spokeswoman added that the U.S. wants to see continued improvement in the relationship between the two Koreas.
