S. Korean Cell Phones Close to Outperforming Nokia

South Korean electronics firms are close to outperforming Nokia in the global mobile phone market.

U.S.-based market research firm Gartner said Thursday that Nokia secured its number one spot in the global mobile phone market in the second quarter with a 22-point-eight percent market share after selling some 98 million cell phones.

Samsung Electronics sold around 70 million phones during the same period to rank second after Nokia with a market share of 16-point-three percent. LG Electronics sold around 24 million phones for a market share of five-point-seven percent to come in third.

The combined sales of Samsung and LG would result in a market share just eight-tenths of a percentage lower than Nokia. That’s far smaller than the difference of four-and-a-half percentage points posted during last year’s second quarter.
