US offers NK $900,000 in Flood Assistance

The United States has offered North Korea up to 900-thousand dollars in flood assistance.

State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Thursday that Washington is talking through the New York channel to North Korea about what relief items it will provide and how it will deliver the items.

She said the flood assistance is likely to include items such as plastic sheeting, tents, among other kinds of humanitarian housing relief, but not food.

Nuland said, “the food question is still being reviewed internally in the U.S. government,” and is separate with regard to the recent flood assistance.

Nuland said the flood assistance would likely be delivered by the non-government organization community, adding that related details still need to be worked out.

The State Department previously said that following severe flooding in September 2010, the U.S. Agency for International Development provided 600-thousand dollars in emergency relief supplies to North Korea.
