Rebels in Libya: Gadhafi Era is Over

The collapse of Muammar Gadhafi’s 42-year government in Libya seems imminent as rebel forces tighten their grip over Tripoli.

Rebels have seized 95 percent of the capital city, including Libya’s state-run broadcasting company and airport, and are now engaged in battle with pro-Gadhafi forces around Gadhafi’s heavily fortified Bab al-Aziziyah compound.

The head of the rebels' National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, told a news conference in the eastern city of Benghazi that the Gadhafi era is over and the council has begun efforts to move its headquarters in Benghazi to Tripoli.

The United States and European countries have virtually concluded that Gadhafi’s government has collapsed and have begun devising “post-Gadhafi” measures.
