Land Ministry to Ask for Libyan Travel Ban to be Lifted

The South Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has decided to ask the foreign ministry to lift the travel ban for South Koreans to Libya as the African nation's civil war appears to be winding down.

The ministry held a meeting with South Korean construction companies as the ban would need to be lifted for company personnel to return and repair damage at construction sites.

The ministry plans to have the companies assess damage and declare the proper amount of compensation. It also plans to ask the foreign ministry to issue special permits to enter Libya in order to prepare for the resumption of construction.

A ministry official said that South Korean construction companies need to re-enter Libya soon, partly in order to win post-civil war reconstruction orders, which are estimated at a minimum 120-billion dollars.

Korean builders in Libya agreed to deliver humanitarian aid to Libya through the International Construction Information Service in addition to aid being delivered by the South Korean government.
