Verifiable Nuke Freeze is Best Hope: Former White House Official

The former top White House official on nonproliferation says the best the international community can hope for with North Korea is for Pyongyang to freeze its nuclear weapons program in a verifiable way.

Speaking at a forum on Korea-U.S. affairs in Washington Monday, former White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction, Proliferation, and Terrorism, Gary Samore, said that diplomacy is unlikely to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

He said a more attainable goal is to place a moratorium on North Korea’s next round of missile and nuclear tests, and delay Pyongyang developing a weapon that can hit the continental U.S.
