US Media Cover Park-Xi Summit

U.S. media outlets reported that South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to cooperate with each other in settling the North Korean nuclear problem but still showed differences on how to achieve the goal.

The Wall Street Journal said the South Korean and Chinese leaders stressed a need for dialogue to tackle North Korea's nuclear threat but reiterated their divergent positions on how to initiate talks with Pyongyang.

It reported that Park emphasized the need for steps by North Korea to wind down its nuclear program before the resumption of talks, while Xi supported the resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue within the framework of multilateral dialogue.

The New York Times reported the leaders of South Korea and China agreed to work together to resume the six-party talks aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons programs, although they did not divulge any details. The newspaper covered in detail the differences the two sides still have on how to engage North Korea.

The Washington Post also reported about the two leaders' agreement to cooperate in ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. It said China has signaled unusual displeasure with the North, which recently carried out a missile launch and nuclear test, and unleashed a barrage of provocative rhetoric despite Beijing’s protests.
