A South Korean man employed at a Hyundai Motor Plant in Alabama is suing local police, claiming officers beat him following a traffic stop last fall.
Local news media reported Thursday that the man, identified as Lee Chang-ho, filed the lawsuit on Monday against the city of Prattville and five police officers in U.S. District Court in Birmingham.
The suit contends that Lee’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated by the police. The U.S. constitutional amendment protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.
Lee claimed Prattville police beat him and used a Taser on him while he was handcuffed after a traffic stop. The lawsuit states police video and audio were on at the time of the arrest but not focused on Lee. It says officers can be heard cursing Lee and encouraging he be tased.
Media reports say the Prattville city attorney has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s consulate general in Atlanta has unsuccessfully attempted to reach Lee several times.
