Asiana Airlines President and CEO Yoon Young-doo dismissed speculation on Monday that it was problematic a pilot with little experience on the Boeing 777 captained the passenger jet that crashed in San Francisco.
Yoon said the captain of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was training on the 777 and an instructor pilot was sitting as the co-pilot. He explained such training flights are common in the global aviation industry as pilots seek a license for a certain type of aircraft.
For the Boeing 777 or a similar passenger jet, Yoon said pilots are required to complete 20 flights, including landing and takeoff, or fly over 60 hours including more than ten flights with a takeoff and landing.
Yoon said the responsibility falls on instructor pilots if any incidents happen during training flights.
Asiana said the instructor pilot on the crashed passenger jet had a total of 12-thousand flying hours, including three-thousand hours at the controls of a Boeing 777.
It also said he had landed or taken off 33 times at San Francisco International Airport.
