N. Korean Deserters Fire at Chinese Police

North Korean military deserters staged a shootout with Chinese soldiers in a residential area in a Sino-North Korean border town. Two of the deserters are known to be arrested and three others are on the run.

According to sources on Thursday, the five armed North Korean soldiers committed robbery across the border for a few days before exchanging gunfire with the Chinese border-patrolling soldiers and police at the Changbai Korean Autonomous County.

Several Chinese soldiers and police officers suffered gunshot wounds during the standoff. Two of the police officers were seriously injured and were taken to a hospital in Jilin’s capital Changchun.

The five runaway North Korean soldiers are reported to have crossed over to China from Hyesan in Yanggang Province on July 23rd.
