North Korea held a military parade Thursday evening after wrapping up a rare congress of the ruling Workers' Party.

The North's state-run Korean Central Television reported on Friday that the military parade was held at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang the previous day in celebration of the recently concluded eighth party congress and that leader Kim Jong-un attended the event.

North Korea reportedly unveiled an array of weapons including armored vehicles and new strategic rockets in the parade.

The broadcaster hinted that the event featured a submarine-launched ballistic missile and an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Earlier, a South Korean government source said the North appeared to have staged a military parade on Thursday at around 6 p.m.

It's the first time the North staged a military parade in celebration of a party congress. The previous military parade was held in October last year to mark the 75th founding anniversary of the party and it was held in the dead of night.
