South Korea says it will discuss with the U.S. and other countries about a UN resolution on North Korean human rights violations as the UN Human Rights Council is set to address the matter soon.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Choi Young-sam said in a regular media briefing on Thursday that Seoul’s stance regarding this year’s UN resolution is not finalized yet and that it will continue relevant discussions with the international community, including the U.S.

His remarks came after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged the UN council to support resolutions addressing human rights violations by North Korea and other nations, signaling a change in U.S. policy from the previous Trump administration, which did not co-sponsor the UN bill against the North in 2019 and last year.

Seoul also skipped co-sponsoring the resolution for the past two years, citing the situations on the Korean Peninsula, although it joined moves to adopt it.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Choi stressed South Korea has made efforts to practically enhance the human rights of North Korean residents in cooperation with the international community. He added humanitarian issues involving the North, including that of divided families separated during the Korean War are also among the government's key concerns.
