The Korean War,
and a Panorama of 70 Years

At 4 a.m. on Sunday, June 25, 1950, North Korea launched a surprise attack against South Korea to ignite the Korean War, a tragic fratricidal conflict.
70 years have passed since then.
The sound of gunfire and cries of victims stopped long ago, but the pain of national division still remains.
While South and North Korea have feuded and clashed with each other occasionally, they have never given up hope for a peaceful, unified Korea.
Let’s look back on the paths the two Koreas have walked over the past seven decades.

N. Korean Leader Oversees Firing Drill of 'Super-Large' Multiple Rocket Launchers Main News N. Korean Leader Oversees Firing Drill of 'Super-Large' Multiple Rocket Launchers North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has overseen a firing drill of “super-large” multiple rocket launchers. The state-run Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) said on Tuesday Kim monitored the artillery firing drill in the country's western region the previous day, adding the drill was aimed at confirming the power and combat capabilities of the 600 millimeter multiple launch rocket system. The KCNA carried a number of photos showing six rockets being fired simultaneously and some showing the rockets hitting a target that appears to be an uninhabited island off Kilju in North Hamgyong Province. The report said North Korea also conducted a test simulating the mid-air detonation of a shell of the rocket launcher system at a pre-set altitude. The KN-25, as it is known by South Korea and the U.S., is a short-range ballistic missile and multiple rocket launcher system, and North Korea claims it is capable of delivering tactical nuclear warheads.  Kim reportedly called for his army to “more thoroughly fulfill their missions to block and deter the possibility of war with the constant perfect preparedness to collapse the capital of the enemy and the structure of its military forces.” Kim also stressed the importance of super-large multiple rocket launches in war preparations, calling for continued modernization of the country’s artillery capabilities.  South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday it detected multiple short-range ballistic missiles launched from the area of Pyongyang toward the East Sea. 2024-03-19
N. Korea Resumes Ballistic Missile Launches to Break Short Hiatus Main News N. Korea Resumes Ballistic Missile Launches to Break Short Hiatus Anchor: As world leaders gathered in Seoul for the third Summit for Democracy on Monday, North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, breaking a short hiatus of provocations. The latest ballistic missile launch came after China wrapped up its "two sessions" of the top legislature and top political advisory bodies, and Russian President Vladimir Putin clinched his election victory. Emma Sparkes has more.  Report: North Korea has fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) said that it detected short-range ballistic missiles launched from the capital Pyongyang area toward the East Sea from 7:44 to 8:22 a.m. on Monday. The projectiles flew about 300 kilometers before landing in eastern waters outside of the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. The South Korean military is analyzing the details of the projectiles while increasing its surveillance of the North.   The JCS said that the joint missile warning system among South Korea, the U.S. and Japan was working well.  The launch comes about a month after the North fired a new surface-to-sea cruise missile, the Padasuri-6, from waters northeast of the eastern coastal city of Wonsan toward the East Sea.   It marks the North's second ballistic missile launch of the year since its first on January 14. The short hiatus of ballistic missile launches, maintained despite the South Korea-U.S.'s recent annual Freedom Shield joint military exercise, ended as Beijing wrapped up its "two sessions" of the top legislature and political advisory bodies and Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed his election victory. The South Korean military said that it is maintaining a readiness posture and possesses the capabilities to overwhelmingly respond to North Korean provocations.  Emma Sparkes, KBS World Radio News. 2024-03-18
