Boy band FT Island released their first album in japan and hit the first spot on the Oricon Weekly Charts, marking them the first foreign male artists to do so.
After dropping their first official album, "Five Treasure Island" on the 18th, 37,000 copies were sold within the first week. This gave them the push to hit number one on the prestigious weekly charts. This is the first time in the Oricon's 42 year history that a foreign male artist(s) achieved such a feat.
According to Oricon, the closest case was of a solo Korean artist, "K", in January of 2006. "K" released "Beyond The Sea" and reached second place. From all foreign artists as a whole, including female, FT Island is the third artist to attain this bragging right, following Korea's BoA and Russia's TaTu.
FT Island actually started by debuting on the underground scene in Japan in 2008 and crossing over to mainstream in 2010. Their single release on April 20th of "Satisfaction" also fared well, reaching number two on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart.
On a related note, the idol group Big Bang reached number one on the Oricon Album Weekly Chart. This has been the first time that a Korean artist was at number one on any of the Oricon charts for two consecutive weeks.
FT Island hasn't forgotten about their Korean fans. The group will be releasing their mini-album, "Return" featuring the title track "Hello Hello", in their home country on the 24th.
