Dangerously Excited

2012-07-21

You can't always go after what you want and what you need.

And sometimes life leaves you with little to choose from...
because, perhaps you don't fancy any of the options up for grabs.

Sticking with the chase of a hopeless dream
or turning your back on that dream because you chose to live.
and not be deprived of the basic necessities in life.

Both can be equally painful.
But you know what,
pain can be a good thing.

Sometimes, it lets you know that you are alive.
And perhaps you should be more alive than you are now.

That's what happens in today's movie.
Dangerously Excited.

Yoon Jae-moon's character loves his life.
It's just the way he wants it to be.

Working as a civil servant for Mapo City,
his life is perfect and peachy the way it is.

The job maybe mundane,
preparing PPTs, answering enquiry or complaint calls
which he conveniently dodges or ignores.
Mostly he sits at his desk/cubicle from 9 to six.
He is always on the dot.
Here at 9 gone at six sharp.

Stability.
The iron rice bowl as some might call it.
A dream job for many it is.

He prepared well for the tests
that lead him to his job,
and prepares well for future promotions.

A master of memorizing facts.
So he is a genius in passing exams.

But his serene life is disrupted when
an indie band moves in to his home's basement.

He can't stand the noise,
but he sticks firmly to his motto...
which is to never lose his cool.

While struggling to cope with the noise,
he ends up spending more time around the young struggling musicians.

He tries to give them a reality check.
But instead he discovers his love for music
while bickering about the hopelessness of pursuing an illusive dream.

Mr. Know-it-all can talk music with the band,
but he is all facts, and nothing more.

Slowly, he let his passion grow,
and he changes.

And he integrates into the band as a base guitarist.

Like all movies centered around music and musicians,
this one builds to a deeply moving final performance.

It may seem a bit slow at times,
and some would argue that the acting by the young
musicians are raw, but I felt that they did a great job
of not over-acting.

The director draws the story from
his personal experience as an indie band member.
So the element of truth will move you.

It reminds you that...

If you really love something,
you will learn to love it unconditionally.

And if that love was genuine,
one day, you will get a chance for a well-deserved reunion.

There are no guarantees in life.
You may love something
and you may not get enough love back.

Be a calculative coward.
Keep that love inside,
and let it continue to glow and maybe even grow...
but remember to live your life.

If you've got it and keep at it,
someday, someone will notice what you have to offer.

Whether its an appreciative pat on the back,
or a gracious applause, or a lucrative contract...
they are all equal returns.

The world needs dreamers to give it a soul.
And it needs realists to keep them alive.

We can't all be dreamers...
but we can be dreamers at heart.
