2016-03-30

For many visitors to Seoul a must-have on their list of places to eat will include Korean barbecue. Even if you’ve had it many times before, here are some noteworthy Korean barbecue places to visit! Please do note that the establishments I’m introducing today will have their names shortened but they can be searched quickly online if you choose to seek them out.

For impressing guests, family members, or that special someone, check out “S Garden” in Apgujeong. This restaurant is one of Seoul’s largest in terms of size, able to accommodate 1,200 guests at once, and includes spacious halls and private rooms and even an outdoors garden. The menu features delectable cuts of hanwoo, or Korean beef, such as short rib, rib eye, bulgogi, and more which will be grilled to perfection at your table by the attentive servers. It’s not cheap but the grand scale of the restaurant and their highly regarded barbecue is what has attracted global celebrities, dignitaries, and members of various international organizations to the restaurant.

For barbecue with history, make a stop to D-도식당 near Wangsimni. This barbecue restaurant specializes in Korean beef sirloin which it has been serving since opening its doors in 1964. All around, you’ll hear the sizzling of these tender cuts of beef which are cooked on a fiery-hot metal iron pan. They are especially famous for their serving size and value. Just be sure to save room for some kkakdugi bap at the end in which cubed radish kimchi and rice is cooked in the beef fat to make a sinfully addictive fried rice dish.

The undeniable favorite Korean barbecue meat for Koreans though is pork and pork from Jeju Island is especially known for its flavor. One of the best places to try Jeju Island pork is at T-라돈 near Hongdae. Every day, the barbecue restaurant receive fresh, never frozen, shipments of the thick Jeju Island pork which you can order in cuts such as samgyeobsal (or pork belly), moksal (or pork neck), and more. You can eat it in wraps, dipped in salt, or the Jeju way, which is dipped in a fermented seafood sauce but no matter which way you choose, it’s one of the most delicious way to experience Jeju pork in Seoul.

If you want to experience a more northern style of Korean barbecue, visit “W-래옥” in Seoul’s Jung-gu. The restaurant is one of Seoul’s most famed for the icy-cold naengmyeon (or noodles in cold broth) which are made Pyongyang style. But the restaurant is also known for its bulgogi which is cooked on a copper grill and pairs perfectly with the cold noodles. A beloved institution, this restaurant has been serving hungry patrons for over 65 years now.

Lastly, for a Korean barbecue restaurant with a fantastic view, check out P-석정. This hidden gem of a restaurant is unique in that it’s located on the roof of Seoul’s Express Bus Terminal! In warmer seasons, you can enjoy Korean barbecue on the roof with a grand view of Seoul’s Gangnam region. Enjoying the sizzling cuts of meat and sides while overlooking the various skyscrapers of Seoul makes it a truly unique barbecue experience that you can enjoy in Seoul only.
