An advertisement has been posted on the New York Times that has denounced the U.S. daily’s description of the waters between South Korea and Japan as the “Sea of Japan.”
Visiting professor at Sungshin Women’s University and public relations expert, Suh Gyung-duk, posted the ad titled, "Error in NYT" in the U.S. daily on Tuesday.
In the ad, Suh said the body of water between South Korea and Japan has been referred to as the East Sea by many nations over the past two-thousand years. He said that the term “Sea of Japan” only exists in the minds of the Japanese government and that using the term is a distortion of history.
Suh said the recent ad was posted with help from Korean Internet users and funds raised by ordinary citizens.
Last June, Suh also posted advertisements in the New York Times and the Washington Post to promote South Korea’s territorial sovereignty over the Dokdo islets.
Earlier on April sixth, the New York Times printed a map that labeled the waters between South Korea and Japan as the “Sea of Japan” when it covered North Korea’s rocket launch.
