The governments of South Korea and the United States will commemorate this month the heroic acts of a U.S. pilot who died in a plane crash in Korea in August 2003.

The U.S. Defense Department said Tuesday that it will hold a memorial service and award a medal to the late Captain Kevin Norman on May 25th, which is U.S. Memorial Day.

U.S. Army Captain Norman died in a crash during an aerial training exercise that went wrong due to engine failure. He diverted the aircraft from a populated area at the last moment to avoid civilian casualties.

The Seoul government plans to issue a memorial plaque in the name of Defense Minister Lee Sang-hee through the South Korean Consul General to San Francisco during the ceremony.
