A former top diplomat says the East Asian community must come together to enhance regional peace and cooperation.

Former Foreign Minister Han Seung-joo made the remark Friday during his keynote speech at the ongoing ASEAN forum on the southern resort island of Jeju.

He said the establishment of an East Asian cooperative network is necessary to promote peace and stability within the region by increasing ties in economics, politics, security and culture.

He added that the formation of the network will depend on to what extent and how the United States is involved in East Asian issues.

The community network was proposed by the East Asia Vision Group, which serves as an advisor to ASEAN members and South Korea, China and Japan.
