'Swedish Official Meets Detained US Reporters'

The U.S. State Department says the Swedish ambassador to North Korea met Friday with two American reporters who have been detained by the communist regime for two months.

This was the ambassador’s second meeting with the two women, following the first on March 30th.

In a daily briefing, department spokesman Ian Kelly said the ambassador met with the two journalists on Friday on behalf of Washington but didn't mention details of the meeting or the condition of the reporters.

North Korea detained Laura Ling and Euna Kim on March 17th near the North Korea-Chinese border and has since refused repeated requests by the U.S. and Sweden for face-to-face meetings.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency announced Thursday that the reporters will be tried June fourth for what the North says were “hostile acts.”
