The U.N. Security Council’s five permanent members, South Korea and Japan on Wednesday will seek to agree on a draft resolution sanctioning North Korea for conducting a nuclear test on May 25th.
The seven countries met for the eighth time on Wednesday morning (Korean time) but failed to finalize an agreement. They will meet again around ten p.m. Wednesday to discuss the issue further. If they succeed in narrowing differences, the council is likely to adopt the new resolution during a full session the following day.
During Wednesday’s morning meeting, participants reportedly agreed to allow tougher inspection of cargo coming in and out of the communist state on reliable grounds that the cargo includes goods related to weapons of mass destruction, and only on the precondition that the inspections take place in territory controlled by the participants.
The meeting’s participants also agreed to seek a freezing of Pyongyang’s overseas assets and financial accounts and a ban on the provision of assistance to the North, with the exception of humanitarian aid, in the new resolution.
