The United States says stronger U.N. sanctions on North Korea will demonstrate to Pyongyang that there are consequences for provocative actions.
State Department Spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters Thursday that the U.S. goal with the new resolution is to come up with a strong collective response that shows Pyongyang that it will be held accountable for its actions.
His remarks come as the U.N. Security Council’s five permanent members, along with South Korea and Japan, reached an agreement on a new draft resolution sanctioning Pyongyang for its May 25th nuclear test.
Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told reporters that the draft resolution, if passed by the Security Council, would result in meaningful and strong penalties on the North.
Rice added that a more comprehensive ban on North Korean arms exports would cut off a significant source of revenue for Pyongyang.
