Japan says it fully supports a proposed U.N. draft resolution sanctioning North Korea.
Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying the move will demonstrate to the North the international community’s stern condemnation of Pyongyang’s recent nuclear test and missile launches.
Earlier on Thursday, the U.N. Security Council’s five permanent members, along with South Korea and Japan, reached an agreement on a new draft resolution sanctioning Pyongyang.
According to the ministry official, the draft resolution is a more polished version of Resolution 1718, which was adopted in response to North Korea’s nuclear test in October of 2006, as the new resolution includes clauses on cargo inspection and stronger financial sanctions.
The paper said Tokyo is likely to unilaterally seek a complete ban on exports to the North and expand the scope of entities that will face financial sanctions in the event the U.N. Security Council adopts the resolution.
