New H1N1 Strain Found in Brazil

Brazilian scientists have reportedly found a new strain of the H1N1 virus in Brazil.

The Associated Press (AP) and other foreign media reported Tuesday that the Adolfo Lutz Institute in Sao Paulo has identified a genetic variant of the virus from samples taken from a patient. The mutated strain is known as "Sao Paulo 1454 H1N1."

Experts said it is not yet known whether the new strain is more aggressive than the current H1N1 virus, but the appearance of a new variant itself poses a risk.

The experts also expressed concern that the influenza virus could mutate into a more deadly strain as winter arrives in the southern hemisphere.
