The U.S. says North Korea's plan to weaponize all the plutonium it produces is a violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution.
Geoffrey Pyatt, the U.S. chief delegate to the International Atomic Agency’s Board of Governors, made the announcement during a meeting of the board that opened earlier in the week.
Pyatt said North Korea's plan to weaponize its plutonium is a violation of UNSC resolution 1874, which demands the North scrap all its nuclear programs.
The U.N. Security Council adopted the resolution on June 13th in response to Pyongyang’s detonation of an underground nuclear device on May 25th.
As a way of protesting the new resolution, the North announced it would start uranium enrichment activities and use all the plutonium it produces to make weapons.
Pyatt said he hopes North Korea will choose diplomatic solutions over confrontation for the sake of international peace and security.
