French Woman Gets 8 Years in Prison for Infanticide

A French woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison for killing three of her babies and hiding two of them in her freezer in South Korea.

The jury in Tours, central France, on Thursday found Veronique Courjault guilty of killing three newborn babies and sentenced her to eight years in prison. Prosecutors had sought at least a ten-year sentence.

The challenge for the jurors, who took nearly eight hours to reach a verdict, was whether Courjault was suffering from a mental illness when she committed the crimes.

Courjault was charged with having killed two of her children, one in 2002 and another in 2003, in Seorae Village in Seoul. She also confessed to having killed another one of her children in France in 1999, one year before she came to South Korea.
