US, Malaysia to Cooperate on NK Sanctions

The United States and Malaysia have agreed to cooperate in imposing financial sanctions on North Korea under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874.

A U.S. delegation is currently in Malaysia to discuss imposing the sanctions. The delegation headed by the State Department's point man on sanctions enforcement, Philip Goldberg, met with central bank and finance ministry officials of the Southeast Asian nation.

Goldberg said the U.S. has received positive reaction on the issue from countries in the region, including Malaysia. He said Kuala Lumpur has the financial expertise and experience necessary to implement the U.N. resolution.

Earlier, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman said his country will cooperate with Washington on shutting down North Korean accounts if it obtains reliable information that they violate the terms of the U.N. resolution.
