A U.S. official says Washington has no plans to hold separate talks with North Korea on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum set to open in Thailand next week.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Scot Marciel at the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs made the remark Thursday as he unveiled Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s plans to visit India and Thailand and her participation in the regional gathering.
But Marciel did not rule out the possibility of the U.S. holding contacts with North Korea during the forum.
He added that participants in the regional meeting are planning to deal with the North’s missile and nuclear programs in a joint statement they will adopt at the end of the ASEAN forum.
Clinton plans to hold a series of one-on-one talks with officials from South Korea, China, Japan and Russia. He added that a meeting between the members of the six-way nuclear talks, minus North Korea, is not likely to take place.
