Two South Koreans are dead and one missing in American Samoa due to a tsunami that was caused by a massive earthquake that struck remote island groups in the Pacific Ocean.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center announced that an earthquake with a magnitude of eight-point-three hit Samoa and its surrounding regions early Tuesday with the epicenter of the quake located 190 kilometers southwest of Samoa’s capital, Apia.
A 62-year-old Korean woman, identified by her surname Lee, died during the quake while working at her store. Another South Korean woman, identified by her surname Shin, died after being swept away by waves caused by the quake-generated tsunami. Her daughter, who was with Shin at the time, is currently missing.
A large number of Koreans’ houses in Samoa were reportedly destroyed by the disaster.
Foreign media said at least 100 people were killed by the recent quake and tsunami.
