Gov't: No Koreans Hurt in Indonesia Quake

The government has confirmed that there were no South Korean casualties from a powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia's island of Sumatra on Wednesday.

A Foreign Ministry official said Thursday that a quake with a magnitude of seven-point-six struck 50 kilometers northwest of Padang city in West Sumatra province around 7:16 p.m. Wednesday, Korean time.

The official said no South Koreans were found to be residing in the region that was hit by the quake.

The official added that there is a coal company operated by a South Korean in Padang city that employs three Koreans, all of whom were confirmed to be safe.

Foreign media quoted the Indonesian Vice President as saying that at least 75 people were killed by the earthquake.
