US Delegation in Middle East to Discuss NK Sanctions

The U.S. has recently opened talks with Myanmar and is now contacting Middle Eastern states to detect suspected North Korean nuclear activities and check on the implementation of U.N. sanctions on Pyongyang.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told a daily briefing that a U.S. delegation, led by North Korea sanctions coordinator Ambassador Phil Goldberg, is traveling to the United Arab Emirates and Egypt to discuss the implementation of U.N. sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear and missile tests.

In July, the UAE seized a North Korean cargo ship loaded with weapons heading towards Iran.

Kelly said the U.S. has long been concerned about North Korea's proliferation activities in the Middle East and that the delegation's trip is part of an overall effort to ensure that U.N. sanctions and other relevant resolutions are implemented.
