USFK Chief: NK Strengthening Nuke Capabilities

The commander of U.S. forces in South Korea says North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is continuously attempting to strengthen nuclear capabilities.

General Walter Sharp, who also serves as the Commander of the United Nations Command, made the statement during an annual meeting of the Association of the United States Army in Washington on Thursday.

Sharp said the North is conducting continuous research and development on missile technology, including missiles that can load nuclear warheads, for domestic use or for exports to secure U.S. dollars.

He declined to confirm, however, reports that the North is in the final stages of restoring facilities at its Yongbyon nuclear complex.

On the reclusive North Korean leader’s health, Sharp said he believed Kim continues to govern and is in charge.
