'Prospects Dim for NK Nuke Dismantlement through Talks'

A former U.S. National Security Council adviser on Asian affairs says Washington is not rushing into talks with North Korea due to the fact that prospects appear low for Pyongyang’s nuclear dismantlement through negotiations.

In an interview with the Council on Foreign Relations, Michael Green said the Obama administration is prepared to meet with Pyongyang. However, Green said that the U.S. sees dim prospects of the meeting producing meaningful results because the North has so publicly and adamantly forged ahead with its nuclear weapons programs.

Green said the major factor in Washington's reluctance to rush into talks is that the Obama administration sees far greater prospects of success with Iran so they don't want to let North Korea set a bad precedent.
