UN Committee Adopts Resolution on Nuke Elimination

A committee of the United Nations General Assembly adopted on Thursday a resolution which was submitted the previous day by Japan calling for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

The resolution, approved by 170 countries at the First Committee session, calls for all U.N. members to take further steps toward the total elimination of nuclear weapons in order to help create a more peaceful and safe world.

The resolution also urged North Korea, which conducted a second nuclear test in May, to adhere to a resolution adopted by the U.N. Security Council and return to the six-party nuclear talks without condition.

The nonbinding resolution will likely be presented and adopted during a General Assembly plenary session.
