UN Reviewing Resolution on NK Human Rights Issues

The United Nations has begun reviewing a resolution seeking the improvement of human rights in North Korea.

The draft resolution, presented by the European Union and Japan on Friday, is similar in content to the resolution adopted last year, as it expresses concern over the human rights abuses in North Korea and reaffirms the importance of inter-Korean dialogue.

In particular, this year’s draft welcomes the resumption of South-North reunions of separated families.

The resolution will be circulated among U.N. members before being put to a vote in at the U.N.’s Third Committee. If the committee adopts the resolution, the U.N. will finalize the measure during its general assembly in December.

The U.N. General Assembly has been adopting resolutions on North Korea’s human rights situation every year since 2005. South Korea will co-sponsor the resolution this year.
