US Decision on Direct Talks with NK Imminent

South Korea’s top nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac said Friday that the U.S. is likely to decide soon whether it will accept North Korea’s proposal for bilateral talks.

Wi made the announcement after meeting with Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, special representative for North Korea policy Stephen Bosworth and top U.S. nuclear negotiator Sung Kim in Washington on Thursday.

Wi said that all parties were on the same page during the discussions and that Seoul and Washington have fine-tuned their views on a possible direct meeting between the U.S. and North Korea.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama recently convened a meeting of top officials related to foreign affairs and defense to discuss his trip to Asia next week and the issue of direct talks with the North.
