The Associated Press says that Aijalon Mahli Gomes, the American detained in North Korea, met in November with Robert Park, an American activist the North detained in December and has recently released.

The AP cited president Jo Seong-rae of the Seoul-based group Pax Koreana as adding that Gomes also attended at least two rallies calling for Park's release when Park was being held by the communist state.

U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley says officials from the Swedish embassy in North Korea have met with Gomes four times since he was detained. The Swedish embassy is the protecting power for the U.S. in North Korea for consular matters.

Gomes came to South Korea from Boston two years ago and has been teaching English in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province. He entered North Korea in January.

The North said Monday that Gomes would stand trial on charges of illegally entering the North.
