GNP Chief Asks China to Play Messenger Role

Ruling Grand National Party (GNP) Chairman Chung Mong-joon has asked China to play an active role as a messenger between the two Koreas in resolving the denuclearization issue.

Chung on Friday held a meeting and a luncheon with Wang Jiarui, head of the Communist Party of China, in Beijing.

During the talks, Chung asked China to convey Seoul's intentions to North Korea properly when Seoul's points are likely to be misunderstood.

The chairman said that for the past 40 years, Seoul has consistently sought dialogue, exchanges, and cooperation as its policy towards North Korea. He called on Beijing to deliver the South's intent to the North.

Wang reportedly responded that China will become a truthful messenger between the two Koreas. However, he added that it is also important that the two Koreas talk directly to each other.
