Foreign Media Cover Sinking of S.Korean Navy Ship

Major media outlets are reporting on the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” naval ship in waters southwest of Baengnyeong Island.

CNN of the U.S. aired an emergency report from Seoul early Saturday morning which said that the ship had sunk due to unidentified reasons.

Japanese media, including NHK, the Yomiuri Shimbun, the Asahi Shimbun and Kyodo News, posted news bulletins on the situation on an hourly basis.

In particular, Yomiuri said the cause of the incident is unclear and could be due to a North Korean attack or a problem with the South Korean ship.

China’s state-run CCTV aired coverage of the sinking ship.

Xinhua News Agency said there could be some deaths associated with the incident.

Reuters reported that the South Korean government is still determining whether or not the incident was the result of an attack by North Korea.

French media, including AFP and Le Monde, also reported on the sinking.
