USTR: US Seeking to Have One FTA Ratified This Year

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk says the U.S. is seeking to have one of its three pending free trade agreements ratified by Congress by the end of this year.

Kirk told Bloomberg TV in an interview set to air Saturday that U.S. President Barack Obama wants to see at least one of the three trade pacts the U.S. has signed be approved by Congress in 2010.

U.S. free trade accords with South Korea, Panama and Colombia are currently awaiting congressional ratification.

Although Kirk did not elaborate on which of the three might be pursued, he did say that the U.S. has made positive strides in regards to the pending deal with Panama.

The recent passage of a U.S. health care reform bill, thought to be Obama’s top agenda, has opened the door for the U.S. to address other concerns.

Seoul is hoping the deal can be pushed through Congress prior to the politically sensitive U.S. midterm elections in November.
