Gov’t Trying to Confirm Safety of Koreans in Quake-hit Mexico

The government is trying to confirm the safety of the Koreans living in the area struck by a seven-point-two-magnitude quake near the U.S.-Mexico border early Monday morning.

A Foreign Ministry official in Seoul said some one-thousand Koreans are estimated to be living in northeastern Baja California near the city of Mexicali on the U.S. border where the quake hit.

The official said it is currently unable to make calls to the quake-affected region, adding that the government has launched an emergency response team to get in touch with the Koreans in the region.

He added that he currently has no information on the extent of the damage or any other details regarding the quake.
