A North Korean defector who settled in the U.S. has reportedly died.

The Voice of America (VOA) said the defector, known by his surname Sin, reportedly hung himself in his New York home last week.

In a phone interview with VOA, Sin’s wife said he was taken to the hospital early Friday but was pronounced dead on arrival.

She said he was depressed over conflicts with the organization which helped him enter America and that he was also experiencing emotional swings.

Sin was one of the first North Koreans to acquire refugee status in the U.S.

After escaping North Korea, Sin hid in China and came to the U.S. via Thailand in 2006. He married Lee, also a North Korean defector, and lived with their son in New York.
