Search and rescue efforts are in their fifth day on Tuesday to find survivors of a fishing boat that sank near the western sea border in the Yellow Sea on Friday night.
The Coast Guard has deployed rescue vessels and helicopters to find the missing crew of the “Geumyang-98.” In addition, it has expanded its search to 37 kilometers around the waters where the ship sank. However, none of the seven missing crew members have been found yet.
Regarding a probe into the Cambodian-registered cargo ship, Taiyo 1, which allegedly collided with the Geumyang-98, the Coast Guard is conducting a close joint investigation with the National Institute of Scientific Investigation into the freighter, which is currently berthed in Daecheong Island.
Using the results of Tuesday’s investigation and analysis of the paint sample from the freighter, the institute will determine if the Taiyo 1 collided with the Geumyang-98.
The Geumyang-98 sank as it tried to return to its fishing operations after taking part in the search and rescue mission for the missing sailors of the Navy’s “Cheonan” patrol boat that sank late last month.
