Conference on Pillaged Antiquities Opens in Cairo

An international conference will open in Egypt on Wednesday to discuss measures to recover pillaged antiquities.

For the next two days, representatives from 16 countries, including South Korea, will draw up lists of artifacts that are put on display in other countries’ museums. The participants will also discuss joint measures to get some of the pieces of cultural heritage returned.

The conference will also urge UNESCO to revise a convention that bans the export or ownership of stolen antiquities acquired after 1970.

The convention prohibits the illicit import, export and transfer of ownership of cultural property. However, it stipulates that there will be no "retroactive" measure for antiquities acquired before the convention was signed in 1970.
