Destroyer to Return to Gulf of Aden

The Korean naval destroyer Yi Sun-sin will return to the Gulf of Aden after monitoring for six days a Korean supertanker hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean last week.

Seoul decided to withdraw the destroyer from the area seven kilometers off the coast of Somalia where the tanker Samho Dream is located. A government official says the Yi Sun-sin has completed its mission of collecting information and confirming the safety of the ship's crewmen.

The Yi Sun-sin will continue to protect merchant ships from pirates after returning to the Gulf of Aden. The vessel will return home in the middle of this month and be replaced by the destroyer Gang Gam-chan.

Negotiations are also in full swing to free the crew of the Samho Dream between the vessel's owner Samho Shipping and the pirates.
