More S.Korean Firms Farm on Leased Land in Russia

More South Korean firms and local governments are advancing into Russia for more farmland.

South Korean Consulate General in Vladivostok said that South Gyeongsang Province and Pohang Livestock Cooperative decided to farm on leased land in Russia's Maritime Province.

The move raises the number of South Korean firms engaged in farming in the region to nine. The area of leased farmland Korea has in Russia is estimated at 1,570 square kilometers.

With leased land in the central region in Russia’s Maritime Province, South Gyeongsang Province will first grow soybeans on half-a-square-kilometer plot of land. Depending on the results, it plans to expand the farming land 20 square kilometers.

Meanwhile, Pohang Livestock Cooperative will grow oats at a South Korean-run farm in the Russian province.
