Japan’s Kyodo News says Japan and South Korea are expected to compete to win a contract to build a nuclear power plant in Turkey.

Kyodo quoted Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz as saying Thursday that the Japanese government and Toshiba Corporation had expressed their intents to take part in the nuclear power plant construction plan.

The report said Japan’s ambassador to Turkey and Toshiba officials met with Yildiz in Ankara on Thursday and conveyed their wishes to participate in the project.

During the meeting, Yildiz reportedly told the Japanese officials that he cannot give a definite answer on the matter until talks with South Korea on the subject are concluded.

Turkey is seeking to build a nuclear power plant in Sinop, a city on the Black Sea. South Korea is currently holding talks with Turkey in a bid to clinch a deal to build the nuclear power plant.
