North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s eldest son, Jong-nam, reportedly says he is personally against his country’s move to pursue a third generation father-to-son power succession.

Japan’s TV Asahi said Kim Jong-nam made the statement during an interview in Beijing last Saturday.

According to the network, Kim said that although he’s against the idea of a third generation succession, he believes the move was made due to internal factors in the North and that the process will likely continue as planned.

Kim said it was his father’s decision to make his younger brother, Jong-un, his heir. He said he hopes his brother will do his best to make the North Korean people’s lives more prosperous.

He added that if his brother asks for his help, he would be willing to do so from abroad.

Asked if he felt any regret over not being named heir despite being the eldest, Kim said that he had no interest in becoming heir and has no regrets in regards to the matter.
